Duende · the room

Designed to be felt.

Most wine bars are designed to be liked. Duende is small, dark, warm and a little mischievous — a room where the list isn't printed and something is always at risk.

The word

Lorca separated three spirits. The muse dictates from above and is intellectual. The angel arrives as grace, from outside. The duende climbs up from inside — from the soles of the feet — and it is a struggle, not a thought.

It does not appear if it sees no possibility of death.

That's the brief for a bar, not a mood board. Duende burns the blood, rejects sweetness, and only shows up when something could genuinely go wrong. A perfectly executed evening has none of it.

The room
Forty seats, no more
Small enough that the room has one conversation. A bar you can see the whole of from any stool.
Dark enough to lean in
You cannot read a label across the room. Light on the hands and the glass, not the faces.
Low ceiling, warm air
Sultry is a temperature, not a colour scheme. The room should be a degree too warm.
Music you feel in the chest
Vinyl, loud enough to lean closer to talk. Never loud enough to stop talking.
One long bar, few tables
The counter is the point. Solo guests sit where the action is, not in exile.
Nothing on the walls that explains itself
No chalkboard manifestos, no framed press. The room makes its own case.
Four house rules
01

The list is not printed

You ask, or you trust. Tell the bar what you want to feel and they pour it. Mischief needs the possibility of being handed something you didn't choose.

02

Something is always at risk

A singer with no microphone. A bottle opened without knowing if it survived. A dish that runs out at ten. Lorca: the duende does not appear if it sees no possibility of death.

03

No bottle is too serious to open

The best thing in the cellar can be poured by the glass on a Tuesday for someone who asked a good question.

04

The staff are the programme

No guest shifts, no brand takeovers as decoration. Whoever is behind the bar is the reason the night goes where it goes.

One night, start to finish
18:00

Aperitivo, doors wide

Light still in the street. Sparkling, something salty, the room half empty on purpose.

20:00

The room fills, the list closes

Printed nothing. The bar starts choosing. Tiramisù Tuesday runs here.

22:00

The risk

Whatever is live tonight: one singer, one poem, one bottle nobody has tasted.

00:00

The back half

Locals, industry off shift, the good stuff opened badly on purpose.

02:00

The last glass

Not a closing time. A last glass, poured by whoever is still standing.

What it isn't

The failure mode of a concept like this is a themed cocktail bar with a password. These are the guardrails.

Not a speakeasy
No password, no unmarked door, no theatre of exclusion. Anyone can walk in — the mystery is in what's poured, not who's allowed.
Not a members' club
Duende is a bar owned by the people who drink in it, not a bar that ranks them.
Not a theme
No flamenco soundtrack, no Spanish menu, no bull imagery. The word is a thesis about risk, not a decor brief.
Not precious about wine
Funky, low-intervention, occasionally flawed and served anyway with an honest sentence about why.

A room with duende can't be bought by anyone in a suit. So it's being bought by the people who'll drink in it.

Concept, not a lease. No site, no opening date — the raise comes first.
