The Funky
Manifesto
Eight principles for a wine culture that gives a damn. Not rules — a way of seeing, drinking, and supporting the people who keep wine honest.
The wine industry has a problem. Decades of consolidation, chemical farming, and industrial production have turned most wine into a commodity — predictable, interchangeable, soulless. Natural wine is the antidote. It's messy, it's unpredictable, it's sometimes a little cloudy. And that's exactly the point.
isitfunky exists because the bars, shops, and producers fighting for real wine deserve better than Yelp reviews and Google star ratings. They deserve a platform built by people who understand what they're doing and why it matters. This is what we believe.
Wine is alive.
Real wine is a living thing. It breathes, it evolves, it surprises. It carries the memory of rain and soil and sun. Industrial winemaking strips all of that away — pasteurizing, filtering, dosing with dozens of additives until every bottle tastes like every other bottle. We reject that. We believe wine should taste like somewhere, not like a lab.
Terroir over technique.
A great natural wine doesn't need 70 additives to be delicious. It needs healthy soil, biodiversity, patience, and a winemaker willing to let the vineyard speak. We champion producers who farm without pesticides, who ferment with native yeasts, who let time do the heavy lifting. The land knows what it's doing — get out of the way.
Small is beautiful.
The best wines in the world are made by people you've never heard of, on plots you can't find on Google Maps. Family vineyards, garage winemakers, the stubborn farmer who refused to sell to the conglomerate. These are the people who keep wine culture alive, and they deserve a platform that actually gives a damn about them.
Every bar is hand-picked.
We don't scrape. We don't aggregate. We don't let an algorithm decide what's funky. Every single venue on isitfunky has been researched, visited, or vouched for by someone in the community. If a bar is on our platform, it's because a human being walked in, tasted the wine, felt the vibe, and said: yeah, this is it.
No pay-to-play. Ever.
You cannot buy a better ranking on isitfunky. You cannot sponsor your way to the top. There are no promoted listings, no secret deals, no advertising masquerading as recommendations. Our curation is independent. Our integrity is non-negotiable. The moment we start taking money for placement is the moment we become every other platform — and we'd rather shut it down.
Transparency is the baseline.
We tell you how we rate. We tell you why a bar is listed. We tell you how we fund this project. If we make a mistake, we own it publicly. Opacity is the tool of corporate platforms protecting their ad revenue. We have nothing to hide because we have nothing to protect except the trust of people who love wine.
The whole ecosystem matters.
Natural wine doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's an ecosystem — producers growing the grapes, importers taking the risk, bars pouring the bottles, sommeliers telling the stories, and drinkers keeping the demand alive. We serve all of them. From the vineyard in Jura to the wine bar in Tokyo to the bottle shop in Brooklyn, everyone has a place here.
Drink funky. Support small. Explore widely.
This is our call to action. Next time you're choosing where to drink, skip the chains. Walk into the weird little wine bar down the side street. Order the bottle you can't pronounce. Ask the bartender what they're excited about. Talk to the person next to you. This is how you keep wine culture alive — one glass at a time, one bar at a time, one city at a time.
