how the funk ledger works

where every producer comes from, how we decide what to show, and what we leave out. every fact on a page has a source and a date.

7,677producers indexed
5,291public pages

five tiers, three public

  • A · charter member
listed by a natural wine charter body: vinnatur, vin méthode nature, avn, triple a, pvn.
  • B · natural fairs
shown in the last two years at a natural-only or majority-natural fair (raw wine, la dive bouteille, salon des vins libres, viniveri…), with the fair and its year. an announced line-up doesn’t count; the edition has to have happened.
  • C · natural importers
in the book of a natural-focused importer we’ve read, with the importer’s name and the date we read it.
  • D · claimed · internal
the producer’s own site says so (native yeasts, little or no added sulphites, nothing added). internal until confirmed.
  • E · poured · internal
seen on a proven natural wine list, nothing stronger yet. internal until confirmed.

the strongest tier shows on the page with its source and date; the others show as “also”. organic and biodynamic are separate facts, never a tier.

the rules we build by

  • one id per thingeach producer, place, appellation, grape, cuvée, importer and venue has one stable id. outside ids (wikidata, vivc, the eu gi file number) are crosswalks, never the key. merged duplicates keep a redirect.
  • a ledger, not a spreadsheetevery claim is a dated observation: who says what, about which producer, from which source, on which date. nothing is overwritten; the page shows what the observations add up to.
  • precedence, written downfor each field we know which source wins: the producer’s own site first, then the official register, then charter bodies and fairs, then importers.
  • reproducibleevery ingest run is recorded with its raw rows and how each row was matched, so any fact can be traced back.

when sources disagree

the strongest tier wins and the others show as “also”. a fact needs a source and a date. if two sources disagree on a village, we show the region only until it’s settled.

where producers are on the map

village and coordinates come from the producer’s own site first, then the official register, then openstreetmap, then the importer’s page. when all we know is the region, the producer sits at the region’s centre: we draw that as a dashed ring and never as a pin. today 1,167 public producers have an exact pin, 1,904 are placed by region only, and 2,220 have no location yet.

grapes

every grape is anchored to the vitis international variety catalogue (vivc): one number per variety, with its synonyms (trousseau is bastardo in portugal). we look up only the names our data contains, one at a time; we never copy vivc in bulk. a grape we only know from the wine’s name is marked “from the wine’s name” and never counted as a strong claim. 435 varieties so far. all grapes →

freshness

every source has a last-run date. each tier on a page shows “checked {date}”. lists we read stop counting after 60 days; proof fades after 12 months.

what we don’t use

neverno scraping of instagram, vivino or raisin. no google places without a budget we’ve signed off. no ratings, no prices, no paid placement. organic and biodynamic certificates are facts on the page, never proof of natural.

how we read

public pages only, robots.txt respected, an identified crawler, one request a second per site, no logins, short quotes with the link.
